Whole post was well said.
In a terrorist attack one of the known principal targets is first responders.
With toy drones and airplanes? Toy airplanes have been around for how long? How many times have they been used in terrorist attacks? But this is all besides the point. Think about this for a moment.... in an actual terrorist attack is the person going to put their actual registration number on the outside (or even inside) of the drone? Nope. When a drone with a bomb strapped to it does not blow up, does not dive into a mass of people and simply crashes or lands should first responders think it should not be rigged to blow up?
If you really have first responders safety in mind you should give them a rule #1.... treat every drone as a bomb. If someone has told you that a registration number on the outside makes a drone safe, they are giving you _bad_ advice. A terrorist the rigs a drone to blow up when the battery is removed in order to hurt first responders is simply going to pay the $5, put in bogus contact information and then stick the registration number on the outside of the drone. The registration is designed to catch honest people... nothing more.... and it is piss poor at even that.
What I'm asking is for people to simply run through the different possibilities and I think you will see that this is yet another "feel good" rule from the FAA. It accomplishing NOTHING (again).
The registration is pointless. It accomplishes nothing. I've said that all along and I've never been proven wrong in 4 years! The data/facts are there.
This is how we end up with a whole book of laws/rules that do nothing but serve to fine/tax and prevent honest people from enjoying themselves with a simply hobby.
Everyone has 10 days to do this or face fines. After we make the rule, we will ask people for input. Typical FAA move. Even if millions of people write in with legit reasons why the rule makes no sense and actually could do harm to those that it means to protect... the FAA won't change a thing. I doubt anyone is actually going to read all those responses.
